The City has had a long history of Employment particularly in Light Engineering and Textiles, Chemicals, Tobacco and Telecoms and this means women have a long history of employment here too. Despite some Industries being downsized and disappearing, we have also contributed a vast amount of custom and excise duty over the years from the Tobacco and all the other Industries.
There is a concept that education and health are free but of course they are paid services funded by Council Tax, National Insurance and PAYE or other Taxation.
Our system does mean some people are involved in peripheral work or,where industries have declined our system allows for this to prevent a proportion of our Community having fewer opportunities than others, particularly regarding Education and Health.
We are proud of our system.
